Choose your style
Black and yellow decks have been at the top of meta in OP05. The reason for that is that both colors have access to strong cards in their respective pools. That makes building a deck with the black yellow big mom such a challenge because the 50-card limit is your biggest enemy. This is why you have to decide whether you want your deck to be more of a black deck that lets you KO and control your opponent’s board or if you want to be more of a yellow deck that takes advantage of triggers and the big mom archetype with black support cards. Choose your playstyle carefully because if you try to do both styles in one deck you will end up with a failed outcome.
Key Cards:
The reason to play the black-yellow big mom leader is mostly because you can play 10C big mom and the 8C Gecko Moria in one deck. These two cards make this deck’s second-turn curve one of the strongest in the game. Gecko Moria can be a great setup for your 10C Big Mom turn by either setting up a defensive play or an aggressive play.
With that in mind, the deck needs to include strong 4C or less cards and 2C or less cards that are good targets for Moria’s ability. Ideally, the best cards would have an “On Play” effect, a KO effect, or a blocker. Let’s take a look at some good targets in the black and yellow character pool.
Great Gecko Moria 4C Targets
Kuzan
If you are playing the control version of BY Big Mom then Kuzan is a great target to pick with Moria’s ability. Picking Kuzan will allow you to draw a card plus leaving it active on the field means that it is a threat your following turn as it can be used to combo with OP05 Lucci or any other KO effect card.
Rebecca
Rebecca is another great target for Moria to bring back. Bringing her back will give you a blocker plus you can activate her on-play ability to add a black character from the trash to your hand. That’s double the value and you can choose to play a 3C or less with Rebecca’s ability. Just remember that timing is important when you activate Moria’s ability to bring back Rebecca.
Borsalino
Borsalino is another solid blocker to bring back with Moria. Granted he does have an on-play ability like Rebecca but his ability to not be KO by an effect is just as handy. If you are trying to build a defensive wall before your big mom turn then this is a great choice.
Lucci
If you can reduce the cost of characters either through an event or using Moria’s ability to bring back a Helmeppo then OP05 Lucci is a great candidate to bring back with Moria. It will allow you to KO up to two targets and a 6k attacker is a nice bonus too.
Absalom
Similar to Lucci, bringing back Absalom can help you KO a target. A great target for Moria’a ability but this card is mostly played in a thriller bark package.
Kikunojo
This is one of Yellow’s new OP06 triggers. It’s very strong in a KO meta that we are in. Plus you can summon her as long as your opponent is at 3 life or less. And if it gets KOd then you can gain a life. A very good target for Moria as well.
Ohm
If you choose to run the sky package in your big mom deck then the Ohm Shura combo is a strong pair to bring back from the trash with Moria. You will get a search from Shura and potentially another body with Ohm’s ability.
Great Gecko Moria 2C Targets
Brannew
This is the classic 2-cost searcher for black decks and depending on the build that you go with it can provide some great value. Generally speaking, you will need to go with the navy control version of the big mom deck to get the best value with Brannew.
Helmeppo
A great card to bring back and combo with Lucci or Absalom. Remember when you bring back cards with Gecko Moria, you can choose the order of activation with your on-play effects.
Shura
As mentioned above, this paired with Ohm can be such a huge power swing in your favor if you manage to high-roll a holly.
Hiyori
Another one of the new OP06 cards with an interesting ability. On play she lets you draw a card from your life and replace it with another card from your hand. This could be a great card to bring back with Moria if you have a trigger in hand that you want to activate on your opponent’s turn. She is also a 2K counter which means you can defend with her early on and then get her back with Moria.
Conclusion
There is no shortage of good targets in both yellow and black for Moria to choose from. But you do need to choose which version of the Black Yellow Big Mom deck you want to play. The version I chose to play focused more on the big mom archetype but if that is not your style no worries.
